Dogs have a very strong sense of smell, so much so that many have been trained to sniff out drugs, guns and even the smell of diabetes. But now some dogs are also being trained to sniff out evidence of prostate cancer.
Italian researchers trained and tested two dogs using urine samples taken from nearly 700 people. 320 were from prostate cancer patients… The rest were healthy.
The study found in 98% of the cases, the dogs successfully sniffed out the prostate cancer.
Study authors say these results show dogs could become valuable in diagnosing prostate cancer, but more research is needed to confirm these results before anything is put into practice.
