The Secret Of The Yin Yang Symbol 05

The Yin Yang sign was developed for a reason. It is your job as a Kung Fu man to figure it out.

Here is a picture of the Yin Yang sign.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-YinYangSymbol

Maybe you have looked at the Yin Yang sign. Maybe you did think about it and you can’t see anything. You see a black and white symbol that is important to Asian culture and the Kung Fu. No matter how much you looked, you couldn’t find anything.

I am a hobbyist auto mechanic. In auto mechanics, you have to take things apart and put them back together. I also have an interest in science. One of the principles of science is reducing something to it’s simplest components. The scientist tries to understand each component, then he might have a better change of understanding all of the components together.

For some reason when trying to figure out the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol, you thought you were stuck with the Yin Yang sign in the picture above. You felt you had to look at that symbol and figure out the meaning(s).

Why? You do realize you are an independent person who can do what they wants, don’t you? If you can do anything you want, why do you keep looking at the Yin Yang sign as a complete symbol? I didn’t. As an auto mechanic and a scientist, I take things apart to find out how they work.

So I took the Yin Yang sign apart. The results are shown in the picture below.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-YinYangSymbolSplit

See how easy that was? But you would be surprised how many people would never thing of disassembling the Yin Yang Symbol into it’s component parts to see if they provided any insight into the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol.

The picture of the Yin Yang Symbol components shows two curved looking shapes and two circles. The two curved shapes have a hole in the wide part where the circles used to be.

Does that picture simulate your thinking any? Now that you have been shown that you can do cut up the Yin Yang sign into it’s component pieces, what might you do next to figure out the secret(s) of the Yin Yang Symbol?

One approach would be to focus on the circles from the Yin Yang Symbol. If those circles are part of some secret involving the human body, what could it be?

At first it might be hard to think of any connection between a circle and a human body. The torso of the human body has a rectangular shape. The head has a complex curved shape. The arms and legs also have a complex curved shape. The penis has a generally cylindrical shape. ( If a person wanted to, they could describe the legs and arms as cylindrical in a general way and ignore the complex curves. )

One fact concerning circles is that a cylinder can be created by extending a circle lengthwise. Maybe that is a secret of the Yin Yang Symbol? The circles of the Yin Yang Symbol are related in some way to the generally circular shape of the arms, legs or penis?

Thoughtful consideration will likely bring most people to the conclusion that particular connection does not feel like it is important enough, to justify passing it on to future generations through something like the Yin Yang Symbol.

Another possible connection between circles and the human body would be the holes in the human body. The holes in the human body can be treated as if they are circular. The eyes are circular,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-EyesAreCircular

the mouth is circular,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-MouthIsCircular

the nostrils are circular,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-NostrilsAreCircular

the ears have circular holes in them,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-EarHolesAreCircular

and both the buttocks and the penis have a circular hole in them.

What might the circles in the Yin Yang sign be trying to say about the holes in the human body? Nothing immediate comes to mind so that possibility will be discarded.

Just as an independent person can dismantle the Yin Yang Symbol to produce circles and curved shapes in an attempt to find some new inspiration into the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol, the independent thinking person can also manipulate the circles of the Yin Yang Symbol in an attempt to figure out any possible meaning they may have.

One way a circle could be manipulated that might produce some type of insight, would be to rotate a circle like the one in the next picture 360 degrees around the X or Y axis,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-CircleWithXYAxes

which would produce a spherical shape like the one in the following picture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-Sphere

Using a sphere to gain insight into the human body seems more likely than using a circle. For instance. The stomachs of long term practitioners of Kung Fu or Chi Kung will develop a pronounced spherical shape.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-RoundStomachSphereCompare

Some practitioners of Tai Chi almost look pregnant because their stomach is so big and round.

Perhaps the secret of the Yin Yang Symbol is that the circles in the Yin Yang Symbol are really two dimensional representations of spheres? And those spheres are supposed to represent the spherically shaped stomach of long time practitioners of Kung Fu or Chi Kung?

That possibility does not seem very likely. Although the basic facts such as “a circle is a two dimensional representation of a sphere” are true, connecting those facts into the conclusion that “the circles are supposed to represent the spherical stomach of a long time practitioner of Kung Fu or Chi Kung” seems farfetched.

There are probably more possible secrets of the Yin Yang Symbol that could be developed using the circles of the Yin Yang Symbol as a base. For now though, attention will turn to the curved shapes of the Yin Yang Symbol to see if they can be used to figure out the secret(s) of the Yin Yang Symbol.

The following picture of an ocean wave will be used to begin the discussion.

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-WaterWave

Is there anything about the picture of the ocean wave that could be connected to the secret(s) of the Yin Yang Symbol?

If nothing comes to mind, a logical first step to take to stimulate the thinking would be to place the curved shape of the Yin Yang Symbol next to the ocean wave for easier comparison.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-WaveYinYangHalf

No immediate connections between the curved shape of the Yin Yang Symbol and the ocean wave come to mind. The Yin Yang half is black while the ocean is blue. The Yin Yang half is an insubstantial symbol while the ocean wave is created from water.

There does not seem to be any connection between the curved shape of half of the Yin Yang Symbol and an ocean wave.

Continuing on with the idea of being independent individuals who can do as they please, and because auto mechanics and science are all about experimenting to figure things out, it seems like a good idea to experiment with the comparison picture.  For no reason other than serendipity, the first experiment involves flipping the curved part of the Yin Yang Symbol vertically.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-WaveYinYangHalfFlipped

The same points previously made about the color of the water and the symbol being different, and the symbol being insubstantial while the water has substance are still accurate. Other than that, flipping the curved shape of the Yin Yang Symbol vertically does not appear to have provided any more insight into what the possible secret(s) of the Yin Yang Symbol are.

Leaving the curved shape flipped vertically, it is then flipped horizontally and compared to the ocean wave in the next picture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-WaveYinYangHalfMirrored

There still does not appear to be any obvious insight into any secret meanings of the Yin Yang Symbol after flipping the curved shape horizontally. Examination of the above picture and actually seeing the “secret”, or the common sense impulse to continue the process of modifying the orientation of the curved shape, leads to the following comparison picture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-WaveFlipYinYangHalfAgain

Do you see the “secret” provided by one of the curved shapes of the Yin Yang Symbol? The next picture should clear up any mystification.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_005-WaveYinYangWaveCompare

A half of a Yin Yang sign looks like a breaking wave! I wonder what that could mean?

Is the secret of the Yin Yang Symbol supposed to be that Kung Fu is related to waves, since the Yin Yang Symbol is associated with Kung Fu and half of a Yin Yang Symbol has the same shape as a breaking wave?

Did you notice the hole in the curved shape of the Yin Yang Symbol just happens to match the hole in the breaking wave?

What was the inspiration for, or the meaning of, the Yin Yang Symbol shown in the picture below?

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-YinYangSymbol

One of the best places to hide something is in plain sight. Like in the well known Yin Yang Symbol. After looking at the symbol every day for some period of time it would be natural to stop thinking about what the symbol might mean. There is a famous Sherlock Holmes story about a letter everyone was looking for. The letter was on a desk right in front of everyone for the entire movie. No one looked at it because it was right in front of them.

What if the inspiration for the Yin Yang sign was the same? What if the inspiration for the Yin Yang sign was right in front of your face? How would you know?

The first thing that would need to be done would be to look at what is in front of your face. When you are performing Kung Fu, what is in front of your face? Your hands usually right? The hands are held up in front of the face in preparation for striking or defense.

Most people would not think there was anything special about their hands held up in front of their face. They might think, “I know my hands. I have been looking at them for years. There is nothing about the Yin Yang sign hidden in my hands”.

Are you certain? What is it that you think you know about your hands held in front of your face? “They are in front of my face? They look like my hands? There is nothing related to the Yin Yang Symbol about my hands when they are held in front of my face?”.

Well there can be something related to the Yin Yang Symbol in your hands when they are in front of your face. The next series of pictures will demonstrate what that something is.

The hands can be held in many different configurations when they are held in front of the face during Kung Fu practice. The next picture shows the hands held with the palms facing up. This odd looking hand position was used by a well known American boxer in the early 1900’s.

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-HandsHeldPalmUp

Doesn’t that look odd? It seems like it would be hard to punch like that. Try holding your own hands like that to see what it feels like.

Does anything in that picture of hands in front of the face seem related to the Yin Yang Symbol to you? No? What if the configuration of the hands in front of the face is changed to the more traditional “knukle up” orientation shown in the next picture?

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-HandsHeldKnucklesUp

Does that configuration of the hands in front of the face present anything that makes you think of the Yin Yang Symbol? Nope? Let’s try another punching configuration.

In some more sophisticated Kung Fu styles intended for people with years of experience in Kung Fu, the hands are held so the inside of the hand points up while the outside of the hand points down as demonstrated in the next picture.

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-HandsHeldThumbUp

The inside of the fist is pointing upwards. The thumb is held on the outside of the index finger. Does this configuration of hands in front of the fist provide any clues to “a secret meaning” or an inspiration for the design of the Yin Yang Symbol? No? Then we have to keep looking don’t we?

There is one more possible configuration for the hands to be held in front of the face. It is a variation of the hand configuration shown above. As can be seen in the next picture the hand is still held with the inside pointed up and the outside pointed down,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-ThumbInsideFist

but in this configuration the thumb is held inside of the fingers

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-HighlightThumbInsideFist

instead of resting on the outside of the index finger.

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-HighlightThumbOutsideFist

As this is one of the hand configurations used in higher level martial arts, it would be reasonable to believe this hand configuration might be related to “a secret meaning of” or the inspiration for the design of the Yin Yang Symbol. The reasoning behind that statement being that as the practice of Kung Fu changed the body over years of practice, it would in some become closer to whatever it is the Yin Yang Symbol is meant to represent.

Did you see anything in this picture,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-ThumbInsideFist

that makes you think about the Yin Yang Symbol? No? Look at the picture some more. There is something in that picture that is related to the Yin Yang Symbol. It will benefit you if you can determine what it is on your own instead of reading on and having it told to you.

It is necessary to be independent and creative when puzzling through these problems. You have been told there is a connection between the hands in the picture above and the Yin Yang Symbol shown below.

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-YinYangSymbol

Do not feel bound and constricted by what you have been given in these situations. As an independent Kung Fu man you can do whatever you want. One thing an independent thinking Kung Fu man might do in an attempt to solve the puzzle, would be to break the Yin Yang Symbol along it’s internal boundary into the two identical shapes shown below.

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-SplitYinYangSymbolTwoHalves

Does comparing the split Yin Yang Symbol to the fists with the thumb inside,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-HandsYinYangHalves

inspire any idea about what the connection between the Yin Yang Symbol and the fists could be?

Take a look at the next picture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-OutlinedHalvesOnHands

An outline of the shape of half of the Yin Yang Symbol has been drawn on top of the fists. The tail of each half is aligned on the index finger. The wide end of each half is aligned on the fist so the hole in the center of the symbol is aligned with the hole in the fist.

The outlines are colored in on the next picture to accentuate the similarity between their shape and the shape of this particular configuration of the fists.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_006-SolidHalvesOnHands

Could that picture be the inspiration for the creation of the Yin Yang sign? Some man doing Kung Fu way back in time had his hands in front of his face as shown in the picture above, and thought what he saw was important enough to create a symbol based on it? A symbol that he told everyone was so important that it managed to be passed down over thousands of years to the present?

That explanation qualifies as something hidden in plain sight. The hands are frequently held in plain sight in front of the face when practicing Kung Fu, and the shape of a Yin Yang half is right there on top of the fists.

Maybe some 80 year old Kung Fu practitioner’s mind wandered while he was doing his form for the ten thousand and first time, and he noticed the the Yin Yang half shape formed by his fists. Then he realized something about the shape was important enough that it should be immortalized by putting it into the Yin Yang Symbol?

That could be the inspiration for the creation of the Yin Yang sign.

What do you think?

Here is a picture of the Yin Yang Symbol.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-YinYangSymbol

The Yin Yang Symbol has been split along it’s internal boundary line into two identical shapes in the next picture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-SplitYinYangSymbolTwoHalves

A previous blog entry discussed how a half of a Yin Yang Symbol looked similar to the shape of a cresting ocean wave.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-WaveYinYangWaveCompare

No mention was made in the previous blog entry about why the shape of half of the Yin Yang Symbol looks like a cresting ocean wave. This blog entry will work at answering that question.

When attempting to solve any problem, a good place to start is to list all of the known facts.

(1) – An ocean wave is made out of water.

(2) – The Yin Yang Symbol is frequently associated with Kung Fu.

If the reader is familiar with books about Kung Fu, a very large percentage of those books will either compare water to some physical Kung Fu movement, or water will be presented in some philosophical or metaphysical setting. Discussions about the energy of the body for instance, might liken the energy flowing in the human body to water flowing in a stream. Or advice on how to meditate might instruct the practitioner “To visualize a pool of still water” while they meditate.

All of those references and comparisons between water, the physical movements of Kung Fu, and Kung Fu philosophy and metaphysics, make it seem likely the Yin Yang Symbol could have something to do with ocean waves or water. But what?

That question is going to be put aside temporarily while another possible connection between waves and the Yin Yang Symbol is presented.

Waves are not limited to water. Electrical signals also has a wave shape. An instrument called an “oscilloscope” was invented to measure the wave shape of electrical signals. A drawing of an oscilloscope is shown below.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-Oscilloscope

On the left side of the oscilloscope is a display for showing the wave shape. There is a grid on the display for measuring. The wavy line on the grid is the shape of an example electrical signal. On the right side of the oscilloscope are some dials that adjust the length and height of the wave on the display.

The next picture shows an example wave form with some labels on it. The labels are the names given to the properties of a wave.

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-WaveShapeLabeled

With that additional information and those additional pictures, it is decided that comparing the picture of the ocean wave with the Yin Yang Half superimposed on it to the wave form from the picture above might help figure out the connection between waves and the Yin Yang Symbol.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-ScientificWaveOceanYangWaveCompare

There do not seem to be any similarities between the two pictures. The electromagnetic wave travels up and down with a repeating curved shape. The ocean wave has a curved shape similar to the shape of half of the Yin Yang Symbol. Neither part of either picture appears similar. Comparing those two pictures does not seem to have helped in figuring out why waves seem to be connected to the Yin Yang Symbol.

There are only a few objects available to use in figuring out the connection between the Yin Yang Symbol and waves. Since comparing the electromagnetic wave to the ocean wave with the half of a Yin Yang Symbol superimposed on it did not help, the next picture compares the electromagnetic wave to the Yin Yang Symbol that has been broken in half.

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-ScientificWaveYinYangHalves

That picture also does not seem to present any obvious answer to why waves and the Yin Yang Symbol are connected.

A previous related blog entry stressed that a person can do anything they want with the clues they are given to solve a puzzle. That blog entry warned against unthinkingly accepting what was provided.

That advice will be applied to the currently intractable problem.

The two Yin Yang halves were created by splitting the Yin Yang Symbol along it’s internal boundary and pulling the two halves directly apart from each other.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-SplitYinYangSymbolTwoHalves

The Yin Yang halves do not have to stay in the same orientation to each other that they are in the picture above. They can be moved around in any spatial relationship possible to see if some inspiration for solving the current problem arises.

Because there are a myriad of possible orientations for the two Yin Yang halves to take with each other, and because this blog post is headed towards a specific goal, instead of moving the Yin Yang halves around in a haphazard way hoping to spot some configuration that provides some inspiration helpful to the current situation, the Yin Yang halves are oriented as shown in the next picture,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-YinYangHalvesRearranged

The reoriented Yin Yang Halves are compared to the wave form.

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-ScientificWaveRearrangedHalves

Do you see the connection? Do you see what the next picture has to look like? No?

It is not that hard actually. Copies of the shape created from the two Yin Yang halves are placed end to end and compared to the wave form in the following picture.

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-ScientificWaveLinkedYinYangHalves

The multiple Yin Yang halves placed end to end in the particular configuration they are in, look like the wave form. The wave shape formed by the multiple Yin Yang halves is highlighted in the next picture.

So is that the answer to why a Yin Yang half looks like the shape of a cresting ocean wave?

 Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_007-ScientificWaveLongYinYangWave

What do you think?

Yin Yang halves look like the shape of a cresting ocean wave. And Yin Yang halves can be manipulated to create a repeating wave shape……

Doesn’t it seem like there has to be some connection in there some where?

This is the Yin Yang Symbol.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_008-YinYangSymbol

A previous blog entry compared a Yin Yang Symbol to the wave form of an electrical signal. The next picture shows the waveform of an electrical signal.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_008-WaveForm

This picture shows the Yin Yang Symbol split along it’s internal boundary and pulled directly apart from each other.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_008-SplitSymbolTwoHalves

The two Yin Yang halves were then rearranged as shown in the next picture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_008-YinYangHalvesRearranged

The Yin Yang halves in the configuration above look similar to the waveform of the electric signal.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_008-WaveYinYangHalves

A line was drawn on the Yin Yang halves to emphasize the resemblance to the wave.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_008-HighlightYinYangWaveShape

After going through all of that information, there was something about the wave shaped Yin Yang halves that seemed unfinished. As if there was still something to say about them. Here is the picture responsible for that feeling.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_008-YinYangHalvesRearranged

Wondering what it might be that is giving me the feeling there is something unfinished about the picture above, I notice there is a hole in the large end of each Yin Yang half. Aligning them seems to be a very obvious action to take. The next picture shows the lower Yin Yang half moved upwards until the hole in it is aligned with the hole in the upper Yin Yang half.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_008-HolesInHalvesAligned

That helped me realize what it is that seems unfinished about the two Yin Yang halves in that particular configuration. Look what happens when a white dot is added to the black Yin Yang half,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_008-BlackHalfAddWhiteSpot

and a a couple of black lines are added to the white Yin Yang half.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_008-WhiteHalfAddLegs

The picture now looks like a simple drawing of a bird.

I wonder if that is a coincidence?

A previous blog entry in this series demonstrated how the Yin Yang Symbol,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-YinYangSymbol

could be split along it’s internal boundary into two identical halves.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-SplitSymbolTwoHalves

The spatial relationship between the two Yin Yang halves was then changed as shown next.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-YinYangHalvesWave

It was noted that the shape created by the two Yin Yang halves in the picture above resembled the wave form of an electrical signal.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-YinYangHalvesLikeWave

The holes in the two Yin Yang halves were then aligned with each other,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-HolesInHalvesAligned

a white dot was drawn on the black Yin Yang half,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-BlackHalfAddWhiteSpot

and some lines were added to the white Yin Yang half,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-WhiteHalfAddLegs

to produce the bird that can be seen in the picture above.

The purpose of all of that manipulation was to try to gain some insight into the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol. While the ability to create a bird from a Yin Yang symbol might be astounding, creating a bird shape from Yin Yang halves does not seem to provide any obvious answer to the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol.

Casting about for anything that might help determine the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol, no matter how inconsequential or seemingly unrelated, I decide to focus on the fact that the rearranged Yin Yang halves from which the bird shape is created

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-YinYangHalvesWave

also resemble a wave form.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-YinYangHalvesLikeWave

One of the properties of waves is that they repeat themselves. The next picture is provided to prove the Yin Yang halves retain the wave even when compared to a actual repeating wave.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-SineWaveYinYangWaves

Because the Yin Yang Symbol is so intertwined with Kung Fu and other areas of knowledge related to the human body, it seems reasonable to assume the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol must somehow be related to the human body. Acting on that high probability assumption, a computer model human body is compared to the repeating wave shape created from Yin Yang halves in the next picture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-HumanProfileYinYangWave

There do not seem to be any initial similarities between the human body and the Yin Yang wave. The constantly repeated advice in this series is “Do not just accept what you are given. You can change anything you are given to try and solve the problem”.

Since we can do anything we want with the evidence provided, it is decided rotating the Yin Yang wave until it is vertically straight up and down might be of use.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-VerticalYinYangWave

A copy of the vertical Yin Yang wave is then placed in front and back of the human body for comparison.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-HumanVerticalYinYangWaves

There it is! There is the connection! The front and back of the human body have a wave shape like the Yin Yang halves.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-FrontBackWaveShaped

Now that I think I have the problem figured out, I know what to do to test if I am right.

I rotate the human body to the rear view and place two vertical Yin Yang waves on either side of it.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-BodyRearVerticalYinYangWaves

The result is what I expected. The sides of the human body also have a wavy shape.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-BodySidesWaveShaped

Just to verify what I am already certain of, an overhead view of the human body is then compared to a horizontally oriented Yin Yang wave.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-OverheadBodyYinYangWaves

The front and back of the human body are also wave shaped.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-OverheadBodyWaveShape

That cannot be a coincidence can it?

The purpose of this series of blog entries is to try and figure out the meaning of the Yin Symbol. Could it really be a coincidence that a half of a Yin Yang Symbol looks like a cresting wave,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-WaveYinYangHalf

two Yin Yang halves can be rearranged to look like a wave form,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-YinYangHalvesLikeWave

multiple Yin Yang halves can be strung together to look like a repeating wave form,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-SineWaveYinYangWaves

and the human body, which is strongly connected with the Yin Yang Symbol in disciplines such as Kung Fu and Chinese medicine, has wave shapes all over it?

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_009-HumanBodyWaves

The answer to that question is “No”. It is not a coincidence”.

The exterior of the human body must exhibit a wavy shape because of the way it is constructed at a deep level.

While it is true that it is not a coincidence that a Yin Yang Symbol can be changed into a wave shape and the surface of the human body is wave shaped, that is not necessarily the answer to the question which is the basis of this series of blog entries.

“What is the meaning or purpose of the Yin Yang Symbol.”

The Secret Of The Yin Yang Symbol 10

Yin Yang  Comments Off on The Secret Of The Yin Yang Symbol 10
Dec 302013

This is the tenth blog entry in a series whose goal is to discover the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-YinYangSymbol

The previous attempts at discovering the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol began with breaking the Yin Yang Symbol in half along it’s internal boundary. The result was the creation of the two identical shapes shown below.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-SplitSymbolTwoHalves

It was then demonstrated the shape of one of those Yin Yang halves resembled the shape of a cresting wave.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-OceanWaveYinYangHalf

Waves are not only found in the ocean. Electrical signals also have a wave shape as was demonstrated with the next image.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-WaveForm

It was then shown how the two halves of the Yin Yang Symbol could be rearranged to create a wave shape.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-YinYangHalvesWaveShape
All of those connections between the shape of Yin Yang halves and waves used to justify the preliminary conclusion that the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol had something to do with waves.

It was then noticed that the two Yin Yang halves arranged to create a wave shape,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-YinYangHalvesWave

could be turned into a simplistic bird shape with some slight modifications.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-YinYangHalvesBird

A bird is a living creature. The ability to produce a realistic drawing of a living creature from the Yin Yang halves was taken as evidence the Yin Yang Symbol had something to do with living creatures in general.

Human beings are a living creatures and they invented the Yin Yang Symbol. So it certainly seems possible the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with living creatures.

To test that idea, comparing the complete Yin Yang Symbol and the two halves of the Yin Yang Symbol to human body seemed like a logical next step. The picture below shows that comparison

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-BodyYinYangCompare

No obvious connections between the Yin Yang Symbol, the Yin Yang halves, and the Human Body present themselves. Since there seemed to be a strong correlation between waves and the Yin Yang Symbol, it was decided to compare the wave shapes created from Yin Yang halves to a human body in the profile view.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-BodyVerticalYinYangWaves

The comparison revealed the front and back of the human body have a wave shape as highlighted by the red lines in the next picture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-BodyFrontBackWavy

That successful comparison made it seem likely other parts of the human body might have wave shape also. To test that likelihood, the wave shapes created from Yin Yang halves were compared to a rear view of the human body.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-BodyRearVerticalYinYangWaves

That comparison revealed the sides of the human body are also composed of wave shapes.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-BodySidesWaveShaped

To ensure the similarities in the first two comparisons were not just coincidence, the wave shape created from the Yin Yang halves was then compared to an overhead view of the human body.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-OverheadBodyYinYangWaves

That comparison revealed the front and back of the human body also have a wave shape.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-BodyFrontBackWaveShaped

The ability to create a bird from wave shaped Yin Yang halves, and the fact the human body is covered with wave shapes, make it seem likely that living creatures are also involved with the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol in some way.

That calls for the current hypothesis of “the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with waves”, to be changed to “the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with waves and living creatures”.

The new material for this blog entry begins here.

More information is needed to prove or disprove the current hypothesis, that the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with living creatures and waves.

Another topic that constantly crops up in discussions of Kung Fu are snakes.  References to “moving like a snake” are just about as common as references to “moving like water”. There are Kung Fu movements that are named after snakes, and there is even a Kung Fu style called “Snake Style”.

Because the current hypothesis is that living creatures are somehow related to the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol, and because a snake is a living creature, investigating snakes seems likely to provide information that could prove or disprove the current hypothesis.

The investigation begins with a picture of a snake.

We are immediately rewarded with a positive result. The other fact we feel fairly certain about in our hypothesis about the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol, is that it related to the shape of a wave in some way, and the body of the snake is shaped like a wave.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-SnakeSineWave

The next picture shows how the body of the snake looks like the wave shape created from Yin Yang halves.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-SnakeYinYangWave

The similarity between the shape of the body of snake and a wave is more supporting evidence for the hypothesis “the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with living creatures and the shape of a wave”.

As of now the current hypothesis is not very helpful. It is too general. While it might feel good to tell people “the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with living creatures and the shape of a wave”, what are you going to do when they say, “What exactly do living creatures and the shape of a wave have to do with the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol?

Additional information is needed before a more detailed hypothesis can be formed.

Another frequently mentioned subject in Kung Fu discussions are “whips”. As with the phrases “moving the body like a snake”, or “moving the body like water”, those Kung Fu oriented discussions will often invoke the phrase “move the body like a whip”.

The picture below shows a man holding a whip up in the air as if he is preparing to use the whip

The alert reader will have immediately seen why the subject of whips have been brought into the discussion. The shape of the whip looks similar to the shape of a wave.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-WhipSineWave

The shape of the whip also looks like the wave shape created from Yin Yang halves.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-WhipYinYangWave

And the wave shape of the whip looks like the wave shape of the snake body.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_010-WhipSnake

The fact that a moving whip has the shape of a wave, and the fact a living creature, a human being, has to make the whip move, reinforces the current hypothesis about the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol.

After ten entries in this series, it seems like the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol must have something to do with living creatures and the shape of a wave.

( Please keep in mind there can be three different cases that all meet the current hypothesis about the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol.

1 – The meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with living creatures.

2. The meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with the shape of a wave.

3. The meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with both the shape of a wave and living creatures. )

( This is a rough draft that needs further editing. It is being made public so it does not get lost or forgotten back in the “draft” section of the website admin panel. )

At this point in the series investigating what the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol could be, the current working hypothesis is “the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with living creatures and something to do with the shape of a wave”. More investigation is needed both to solidify the current hypothesis and to make it more detailed.

The previous blog entry talked about whips.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-Whip

That entry noted that whips have the shape of a wave when they are being used,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-WhipWaveShaped

and it is necessary for a living creature, a human being,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-HighlightHumanUsingWhip

to use a whip.

While thinking about whips I recall that there is a movement from a Kung Fu style called “Tai Chi” that is named “Single Whip”. The picture below shows a Tai Chi practitioner in the Single Whip pose.

The whip and the man doing the Single Whip movement are then compared to each other.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-WhipSingleWhipCompare

At first glance there does not seem to be any visual connection between the whip and the Single Whip movement. Perhaps the movement is called “Single Whip” because the practitioner is supposed to move their body like a whip?

If that was true then it would also mean that the practitioner was supposed to move like a wave, because a whip makes a wave motion when it is used. To refresh the memory about waves, here is the picture of the a scientifically defined wave.

Inspection of the Single Whip posture results in the realization that with a little modification, the human body in the Single Whip posture can be made to look like a wave.

If the back arm and the front leg of the man are erased,

the remaining parts of the body bear a resemblance to one quarter of a wave shape.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-OneSingleWhipOneQuarterWaveShape
If the modified Single Whip posture in the picture above really does resemble a wave shape, then it should be possible to create a full wave from multiple copies of the modified Single Whip posture.

First a copy of the modified Single Whip posture is mirrored and placed end to end with the current copy of the modified Single Whip posture.

The two Single Whip postures form the shape of half of a wave.

A copy of the two Single Whip postures from the picture above is copied, flipped, and aligned on the current two Single Whip postures.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-WaveFourSingleWhips

As expected, the four manipulated copies of the modified Single Whip posture form the shape of a complete wave.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-FourSingleWhipsFullWaveShape

The ability to create a wave shape from modified Single Whip postures lends more credence to the current hypothesis for the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol, which is “the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with living creatures and the shape of a wave.

It could be argued that the previous process to create a wave shape from the Single Whip posture was too convoluted to have any meaning. It could be argued that any object can be manipulated to create the shape of a wave, so there is no special meaning to creating a wave from modified Single Whip postures.

That is a reasonable argument actually. While there is no denying the wave shape created from the mirrored, flipped, and modified Single Whip postures, how does the ability to form a wave from those modified shapes add any insight into the connection between the unmodified Single Whip posture and the shape of a wave?

While forming a wave shape from the mirrored, flipped, and modified Single Whip postures may not add any insight to the current hypothesis for the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol, the fact that a wave shape is formed reinforces the belief there is some connection between the shape of a wave and the normal, unmodified Single Whip Posture. Enough reinforcement to merit further investigation.

Since placing the mirrored, flipped, and modified Single Whip postures end to end in a particular way produced a wave shape, linking a number of normal Single Whip postures next to each other seems like a logical place to look for some connection between the shape of a wave and the normal Single Whip posture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-WaveSingleWhipChainCompareBase

There is a connection between the linked Single Whip postures and the shape of a wave. A wave can be created by beginning at the back foot of the far left Single Whip posture,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-RightFootBeginWave

and drawing a curved line up to the extended out right hand,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-FirstWaveCurveUp

then curving the line down the rear extended left hand of the next Single Whip posture in the change and down to it’s front right foot,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-FirstWaveCurveDown

then repeating that pattern across the picture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-WaveOnSingleWhips

Because it was possible to create a wave shape by starting at the rear foot of the left most Single Whip posture in the chain of Single Whip postures, it seems worthwhile to examine the string of Single Whip postures for more wave shapes.

That examination is rewarded by the discovery of a wave that begins at the extended rear arm of the left most Single Whip Posture.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-RightRearHandWaveBegin

A curved line is drawn from the extended rear arm down to the front foot,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-HandWaveFirstCurveDown

then up the rear foot of the next Single Whip posture in line and out to it’s extended right hand.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-FirstHandWaveCurveUp

The pattern is then repeated across the remaining Single Whip postures.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-AllHandWaves

A whip functions by transmitting a wave shape generated by the user through itself. There is a movement in the Tai Chi Kung Fu form called “Single Whip”. It has just been shown that a wave shape can be created by stringing multiple Single Whip postures together.

What if the Tai Chi form named ‘Single Whip” is so named, because the practitioner is supposed to generate a wave shape and send it through their body, in the same way they would generate a wave shape with their body and send it through a whip? How could that possibility be tested?

One method would be to compare the end results of sending a wave through the body by performing the Single Whip movement to the results of sending a wave through some other medium. Because the example should be more familiar, waves in the ocean will be chosen for the comparison instead of waves in a whip.

A previous blog entry noted how an ocean wave and the scientifically defined wave shape were similar.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-ScientificWaveWaterWave

Since the ocean wave and the scientifically defined wave shape are similar, the ocean wave can be interchanged with the scientifically defined wave shape and vice versa. That means the wave shape on the man performing the Single Whip movement,

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-WaveCurveOnSingleWhip

can be replaced by the ocean wave.

Secret_Of_Yin_Yang_Symbol_011-OceanWaveOnSingleWhip

What are the characteristics of an ocean wave? An ocean wave is made of water, and it contains and transmits a force, which can also be called “power” or “energy”. The waves travel from the ocean towards the beach where they crash and dissolve.

What will happen to a person who stands in front of a crashing wave? They will get knocked down if the wave is large enough. Why does the wave knock the people down? The obvious answer seems to be “because the water knocked them down”. While that answer may seem obvious, it is not scientifically accurate.

One of the characteristics of a wave was listed as “the transmission of forces”.  What knocks the people down according to science is the force in the water, not the actual water itself.

What is the purpose of Kung Fu? “Kung Fu” is the Chinese name for hand to hand combat, so the goal of Kung Fu could be described as “knocking someone down”. Which coincidentally is the same thing an ocean wave will do to anyone standing in front of it.

That fact supports the idea that the “Single Whip” movement from Tai Chi is so named, because the practitioner is supposed to create a wave shape with their body and transfer it to their front hand. The force contained in the wave would then be transmitted from the hand to the body of an opponent, which would result in knocking him down, just like the force in an ocean wave knocks someone down.

——–

All of the previous discussion has resulted in one major new concept that could impinge on the current hypothesis for the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol. That is the concept of “forces”, which have the ability to affect the environment in some way. One of the characteristics of forces is that they can be contained within and transmitted by waves.

The current hypothesis for the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol is “The meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol has something to do with living creatures and waves”. If waves can contain forces, and living creatures can generate waves and send them through their body or other objects like a whip, then it seems reasonable to tentatively modify the current hypothesis for the meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol into

“The meaning of the Yin Yang Symbol is related in some way to living creatures, the shape of a wave, and “forces” which are defined by the science of physics”.
